It's a fact: South Padre Island will bear the brunt of many tropical storms and hurricanes. Don't learn this lesson the hard way; prepare for a disaster today.

• Make sure you have enough insurance coverage – When was the last time you reviewed your insurance coverage? Are you comfortable with its limits? Are your most valuable items (like fine jewelry or coin collections) covered? Do you understand the deductible? Does the policy have inflation protections?
• Document your belongings with a home inventory – Use a digital camera or video camera to create a home inventory – and record everything! Include model numbers, serial numbers, purchase dates, purchase prices, and other details. Store your home inventory offsite such as in a safe deposit box or online.
• Create an emergency disaster kit – Either purchase or create a disaster kit. Stock your kit with food, water, cash, flashlights, batteries, medication, toiletries, and other necessities for being self-sufficient in the aftermath of a disaster.
